Pinoys in Libya alerted over armed clashes in Tripoli

The Philippine Embassy in Tripoli has alerted Filipinos in Libya to be vigilant and stay safe following armed clashes reported in the country’s capital city.

“The public is advised to avoid Seaside Road, Omar Mukhtar and Al Jalila Streets, and other nearby affected areas,” the Embassy said in an advisory.

“Please take extra precautions and maintain situational awareness at all times as we monitor the situation,” it added.

The embassy advised Filipinos in Libya that in case of emergencies and incidents, they may immediately reach out to the Embassy through the following:

ATN Hotline: 0944541283
Consular Hotline: 0926976523
Email: tripoli.pe@dfa.gov.ph

The Embassy said all consular services are indefinitely suspended starting May 17. The clashes reportedly started in Janzour area, a densely populated neighborhood in Tripoli, last May 15, involving indiscriminate fire and the alleged use of heavy weapons.

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya said in a May 16 statement that “the current mobilization of forces affiliated with different armed groups creates tensions and increases the risk of clashes that could spiral into armed conflict.”
