1 dead as 2 light planes collide in southwest Sydney

SYDNEY – A pilot was killed after two light aircraft collided mid-air on Sunday in southwest Sydney, according to authorities here.

Police said emergency services were dispatched at around 12:15 p.m. to the vicinity of an airfield in Wedderburn, about 50 km southwest of central Sydney, following reports of a plane crash.

Officers were told that two light planes had collided in mid-air before one of the aircraft crashed into a forested area. Responders later found the body of the pilot, who was believed to be the plane’s sole occupant.

The second aircraft managed to land safely at the Wedderburn airfield, and its pilot was unharmed. Police have established two crime scenes, and the Australian Transport Safety Bureau has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the mid-air collision. (Xinhua)
