PCG on high alert as passenger influx for holiday soars

LEGAZPI CITY – The Philippine Coast Guard in Bicol (PCG-5) is expecting an influx of about 185,000 passengers in various ports in the region as it carries out maritime safety measures for the holiday season.

In a phone interview on Friday, Commodore Ivan Roldan said ports are monitored and vessels are inspected to ensure safe and orderly travel from Dec. 20, 2025 until Jan. 4, 2026.

Department of Transportation’s Malasakit Help Desks are set up at major seaports to provide travelers with aid and quick emergency response.

“Our Search and Rescue (SAR) units, response teams, and floating assets are on heightened alert. We are continuously coordinating with port stakeholders and maritime agencies to ensure passenger safety and security,” he said.

The PCG-5 expects over 100,000 outbound passengers and more than 85,000 inbound passengers, especially at ports servicing island-bound and inter-island routes.

Roldan said over 300 front-line personnel from PCG-Bicol are on standby for deployment, supported by 17 floating assets and seven land vehicles.

Sea passengers are reminded to arrive early at ports, adhere to safety protocols, wear life jackets when required, and avoid boarding vessels that are overloaded or lack proper safety equipment.

“Passengers are also encouraged to secure tickets from legitimate sources, stay vigilant, and report any safety concerns to Coast Guard personnel or the Malasakit Help Desks located at the ports,” he said. (PNA)
