BJMP: 153 learners benefit from Oral Health Care Program in Oriental Mindoro town

ROXAS, Oriental Mindoro — As February unfolds, the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP)-Roxas District Jail shines a spotlight on the importance of oral health, fostering a culture of preventive dental care and healthy smiles through the conduct of education and community outreach mission at the Paclasan Elementary School, here.

BJMP Mimaropa information officer Jail Officer 3 Joefrie Anglo reported Wednesday the activity serves as a platform to empower young learners and communities to prioritize their oral health, ensuring a nation with smiles that radiate well-being and vitality.

On top of the oral health care promotion, the BJMP-RDJ through the initiative of acting district jail warden Jail Senior Inspector Rodante Cayabyab, distributed 200 dental hygiene kits to student beneficiaries, including information, education, and communication (IEC) materials, and hot meals.

Anglo said, “education plays a crucial role in improving oral health, and schools are at the forefront of these efforts. During the month observance, the BJMP visits schools to conduct informative sessions, teaching children the essentials of oral care through interactive activities.”

“This not only empowers the younger generation with knowledge but also encourages them to become oral health advocates within their families and communities,” he added.

According to the 2018 National Survey on Oral Health of the Department of Health, about 83% of children aged 5-12 years old are suffering from tooth decay, This dental disease is revealed to be the leading cause of absenteeism in schools.

Pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 559, series of 2004, February has been celebrated as “Oral Health Month” in the Philippines to encourage Filipinos to take charge of their preventive oral care and foster a sense of responsibility for their own health.
