Sulu town declared gun-free, peace center community

ZAMBOANGA CITY – The municipality of Omar in Sulu was officially declared a gun-free area and peace center community through a resolution adopted by the Sangguniang Bayan (Municipal Council).

The Army’s 11th Infantry Division (11ID) praised the declaration, read by Omar Municipal Vice Mayor Juddin Nur Pantasan during a Thursday ceremony at Barangay Lahing-Lahing’s covered court, marking a key milestone in the town’s peace efforts.

“The resolution affirms Omar town’s commitment to public safety and lasting peace,” the 11ID said in a statement Friday.

Omar Municipal Mayor Abdulbaki Ajibon, in a separate statement, also thanked barangay leaders and security forces for their unity and support, noting that sustained dialogue and cooperation are critical to achieving the declaration.

Brig. Gen. Alaric Avelino Delos Santos, commander of the 1102nd Infantry Brigade, emphasized that the milestone “was made possible by the people’s willingness to embrace peace,” highlighting that security efforts succeed when communities take ownership of safety and order.

Maj. Gen. Leonardo Peña, 11ID commander, likewise commended the collective efforts behind the declaration, emphasizing that choosing peace is essential to progress and future stability.

He called on all stakeholders to protect and sustain the gains achieved for the next generation. (PNA)
