QUEZON CITY — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority’s (MMDA) solar-powered water filtration system has successfully provided 5,040 gallons of clean water in Naga City, which was severely hit by Severe Tropical Storm Kristine.
The MMDA said it conducted its on-site water purification in the city’s barangays Mabolo and Triangulo.
The purified water benefited up to 604 families in the said barangays, the agency added.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. earlier directed the deployment of the water purifiers in Bicol communities affected by the storm.
“We are going to run into that situation where water supply is critical,” the President said during a briefing last week at the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) Headquarters in Camp Emilio Aguinaldo, Quezon City.
In response to the president’s directive, the MMDA sent a 30-man team to assist in Bicol, bringing with them 40 solar-powered water filtration systems, one aluminum boat, two engine-operated rubber boats, 20 small fiberglass boats, 1000 life vests, six chainsaws, modular tents, and medicines for leptospirosis.
The MMDA’s water filtration system is a 6,000-liter per day machine.
MMDA Chairman Atty. Don Artes said their deployment of personnel and equipment is in accordance with the president’s instructions for a whole-of-government approach in responding to the impact of the storm.
He added that the MMDA continues to coordinate with the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) for the exact areas where the agency’s contingent and resources will be dispatched. (PIA DMD)
