ST. PAUL — Former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro has begun serving his 27-year and three-month prison sentence for his role in the attempted coup d’etat in 2022.
The 70-year-old conservative leader is being held at the Federal Police Superintendence in Brasília — the country’s equivalent of a central police headquarters — where he was recently taken into custody after allegedly attempting to evade house arrest.
The sentence was finalized by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes after Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court (STF) declared Bolsonaro’s conviction “final.”
Bolsonaro was sentenced alongside several others identified as part of the “first nucleus” of individuals behind the plot aimed at preventing President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva from assuming office despite winning the October 2022 elections. (Agenzia Nova)
