Honesty indeed matters, For his inherent honesty, Police Staff Sgt. Bernard Dalisay of the Capas, Tarlac has earned  earned high praises and commendations from Philippine National Police chief, Gen. Guillermo Eleazar.

Despite the headships imposed by the vicious Covid-19 pandemic, Police Staff Sgt. Bernard Dalisay opted to be honest and returned the bag containing P80,000 cash and other valuables to its owner, an Aeta couple, Mateo and Bernadet Balintay, also from Capas.

In a statement last Wednesday, Eleazar said: “I encourage other police officers to follow the example of SSgt. Dalisay who managed to spell out the true meaning of honesty and integrity amid the challenging times we are facing.” he said.

The Balintay couple reportedly saved the money from selling banana blossoms for the past 12 years. On Tuesday, Bernadet fell asleep behind a police station, while waiting for the public market to open, and lost the bag. The couple searched for the bag but to no avail. Fortunately, it was Dalisay who found it.

Dalisay at first thought the bag contained garbage but discovered the cash inside it upon checking. He then went  to the market to look for the bag’s owner but no one claimed it.

At the police station, Dalisay and his colleagues found Mateo’s identification card with a written address inside the bag, prompting them to go to the residence of the couple who were not at home then.

On Wednesday, Dalisay went to the Capas mayor’s office and had the Balintays summoned. The grateful Balintays met Dalisay at the town hall and profusely thanked the honest police officer for his integrity.
