Naga City, State U partner to develop zero-waste goal

NAGA CITY – The Naga City government and the Central Bicol State University of Agriculture (CBSUA) in Pili, Camarines Sur have patner together to devlop a zero-waste management system in this city.

Once ready, the system will be implemented at the city’s sanitary landfill (SLF) facility in Barangay San Isidro here, which is being run by the LGU through its Solid Waste Management Office (SWMO).

In a Memorandum of Understanding signed recently by Naga City Mayor Nelson Legacion and CBSUA president Alberto Naperi, both parties committed to collaborate with each other towards to realization of their objective.

Legacion told media he is glad about the project as it will further improve the city government’s approaches to sound, orderly, systematic abd efficient garbage disposal, aside from the livelihood opportunities it will create for garbage collectors, sorters, and recyclers.

Under the accord, CBSUA will spearhead research activities and provide technical assistance to SWMO including the utilization of its extension and internship programs to achieve the purpose. It shall also conduct joint research activities with the city government in the field of agriculture and allied courses.

Naperi said they will introduce in the project the principle of circular economy, a system aimed at eliminating waste through continual use of resources that promotes reuse, sharing, repair, refurbishment, remanufacturing, and recycling thereby minimizes the use of resource inputs and reduce pollution and carbon emissions.

“The circular economy aims to keep products, equipment, and infrastructure in use for a longer time, thus improving the productivity of these resources,” he said.
