The Industrial Technology Development Institute (ITDI) of the Department of Science and Technology (DOS) has developed a power backup system for use during outages.

DOST Secretary Fortunato de la Peña in a New Year’s Eve report said the system was developed as to ensure uninterrupted power supply (UPS). “It has simple yet sturdy design and is easy to operate and maintain. Locally available materials were used for fabrication,” he said.

Dela Pena further said the system offers solution to large equipment needing continuous energy source without interruption. “Parameters such as current, temperature, and relative humidity that may affect the systemic operation of the power backup system are on a prescribed scale and do not affect its reliability, durability, and efficiency,” he added.

The DOST official said power backup system has been proven effective in high consumption load without implications on costs and variability to its backup storage. “This technology should is vital in continuous processing and manufacturing in areas highly susceptible to power outage,” he noted.

Dela Pena said the system has been tested on some equipment installed in DOST – ITDI’s Modular Multi-industry Innovation Center, such as pressure filter, blast freezer, slicer, grater, and conveyor.” ITDI, he added, has developed a guidance document for fuel dispensers.
